August 21 is Senior Citizens Day

President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first National Senior Citizens Day in 1988. Observed on August 21, a Thursday this year, the annual holiday is dedicated to celebrating older adults’ accomplishments and the positive impacts they have on the community.

“Throughout our history, older people have achieved much for our families, our communities and our country. That remains true today and gives us ample reason to reserve a special day in honor of the senior citizens who mean so much to our land,” Reagan proclaimed. “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute.”

You can celebrate this holiday by reaching out to a senior. Perhaps visit a nursing home or assisted living facility and sit down to listen to the wealth of personal and historical information in residents’ life stories. Go a little out of your way to say “hi” to a senior living near you. Help them with chores or errands.

For younger adults and kids, it is a wonderful time to say “thank you” to the older adults in your lives: parents, older friends, aunts, uncles, grandparents and great-grandparents. Let them know how much you appreciate them. Chat on the phone or stop by for some iced tea or a cold beer. Share a special meal and memories. Maybe revive a family tradition.

If you are a senior yourself, why not treat yourself for the holiday? Do whatever you like. Maybe finally try that one thing you have never had time for before. Or maybe you prefer to relax at home with family and friends. You have earned it, so enjoy your special day.

We at The Connection love celebrating our more “seasoned” readers. If you are an amazing senior or know one, email editor@castlepinesconnection.com and share your/their story with us.
