Blue envelopes to help the “blue”

Blue Envelopes for individuals with special needs to fill out in advance and hand to officers during traffic stops keep interactions safe, clear and respectful.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) has rolled out a new program to help ensure that interactions with law enforcement are safe, clear and respectful for everyone at a traffic stop, including those with a disability or who may need additional assistance.

The Blue Envelope Program officially launched on October 1. It is designed to support safer and less stressful interactions with law enforcement by providing deputies with important information about individuals with special needs.

How it works: When a deputy conducts a traffic stop, a person can hand over a Blue Envelope containing copies of their driver’s license, proof of insurance, registration and any other relevant information, including details about verbal or communication needs or other accommodations. This allows deputies to provide the support and understanding an individual may require.

The program began in Connecticut in 2020 and has since expanded nationwide. Arapahoe County, Jefferson County, Denver and Aurora also participate in the Blue Envelope program.

Blue Envelopes are free and available for pickup at the DCSO in Castle Rock, located at 4000 Justice Way, and the Highlands Ranch substation at 9250 Zotos Drive.
