Dear Mrs. A – August 2025

Dear Mrs. A.,
Here comes the school year, would you kindly give us a school etiquette refresher we can share with our kids?
-Grinning in Green Briar
Dear Grinning,
What a wonderful request and I’m happy to answer. Let’s start with being on time and being ready to work. It shows respect for your teachers and classmates. Respect personal space, don’t crowd or touch others things without permission. Listen and don’t interrupt, raise your hand, wait your turn and stay off your phone during instruction.
Say please and thank you to EVERYONE; this includes bus drivers, cafeteria workers, teachers and staff. Kindness goes a long way.
Follow the dress code with style, express yourself, but follow school guidelines. It you’re unsure, keep it clean and appropriate.
Be inclusive, invite others to join in games or at lunch. One friendly gesture can make a big difference to others.
Use your inside voice, especially in hallways, buses and common areas. Keeping it down helps keep the peace.
If you are walking to school use the crosswalks, cross only at corners and signals. Make eye contact with drivers, never assume a car sees you, especially if they are backing up. And do not dart between cars, it isn’t safe, and you aren’t visible to drivers.
For parents, respect drop-off and pick-up rules, communicate courteously, avoid gossiping, label everything and support school rules at home.
For our community, pay attention to the times and the flashing lights indicating school zone hours. Keeping our children safe is a top priority.
We are so fortunate to have so many wonderful schools in our area. And I am so appreciative to everyone in our community who helps keep it that way.
With Big Love,
Mrs. A.
