Fall is the season to replace thirsty lawns

Longtime Pine Ridge HOA homeowners Loyd and Barb Saenger took advantage of CPNMD’s water reduction services and created this wonderful Xeriscape garden at their home.
We all play a role in preserving Colorado’s most precious resource: water. The Castle Pines North Metro District (CPNMD) partners with Resource Central, an environmental nonprofit, to offer practical tools to save water, reduce outdoor watering costs and create beautiful, waterwise landscapes.
“If you’ve been thinking about replacing your lawn, now is the time to act. Fall is one of the best seasons to start, and September’s warm soil, cooler air temperatures and bright days make it ideal for removing turf and planting new, low-water gardens,” stated Nathan Travis, district manager for CPNMD.
Through CPNMD’s Lawn Replacement Program, homeowners can receive up to $2,000 in rebates to replace up to 4,000 square feet of lawn with native and adapted plants.
Removing just 1,000 square feet of lawn can save you 12,000–20,000 gallons of water annually, reducing your water bill and helping to keep the community sustainable.
September is also a great time to inspect your sprinkler system. Many systems over water or leak, wasting thousands of gallons of water. Resource Central’s Slow the Flow program offers free sprinkler evaluations from trained technicians who will check for inefficiencies, recommend fixes and even provide a custom watering schedule.
Pine Ridge HOA resident Loyd Saenger had his system evaluated. “I’m glad I took advantage of the Slow the Flow program,” said Loyd. “The irrigation expert identified ways to improve the efficiency of my sprinkler system and I’m now using less water but still keeping my landscape healthy and thriving.”
