Outdoor story time program expands

On August 6, Douglas County’s Assistant Director for Community Health Laura Larson participated at the Backcountry Wilderness Area’s Sunshine & Storytime.

In August, the Highlands Ranch Community Association’s Backcountry Wilderness Area (BWA) expanded its Sunshine & Storytime program to serve more children in the community. The program now offers increased weekly outdoor story times, from one to three times per week, to meet the growing community demand.

Each week, the story will be different with themes based on the season. Activities include access to a mud kitchen, a natural sandbox and hands-on stations, including books.

“Sunshine & Storytime opens the door to nature for our youngest community members and their caregivers,” said Mark Giebel, director of BWA. “We’ve witnessed firsthand how time spent outdoors benefits people of all ages—physically, mentally and emotionally.”

Sunshine & Storytime is held at BWA’s Base Camp, 6005 Ron King Trail, Littleton, and is free to the public but registration is required. An adult is required to accompany each child.

Thanks to local donations and sponsorships, it is predicted that more than 4,500 families will participate by the end of this year.
