Pickleball and Mahjong…what fun

The six teams at Marla Jensen’s annual pickleball tournament at her Whisper Canyon home.

The last week of August was a busy time at Marla Jensen’s home in Whisper Canyon as she hosted her annual pickleball and Mahjong tournaments.

This year, there were six pickleball teams all with coordinated outfits and creative pickleball-themed names. “Unfortunately, the weather had a mind of its own and we had to suspend play before the tournament could be completed, but luckily the six teams were available to play the following week,” said Linsay Shirley, who lives in The Village at Castle Pines.

To add to the fun, Marla’s husband Jon dressed up as a pickleball to entertain the teams. Linsay was on the winning team, No Pickles Please, with Jaime Remley. They received a brand new pickleball bag and other swag as prizes. In the non-winners bracket were the Pink Pickles, Stephanie Fry and Marla.

Sixteen women also gathered for the Mahjong tournament. This year, the players brought donations to benefit a local nonprofit. “We raised $1,000 for Backpack Society,” said Marla. There was a raffle for prizes and winners of the tournament received prizes for first through third place.

“The events are so well organized with the help of friends; we all look forward to next year’s gathering!” concluded Linsay.

Marla Jensen also hosted 16 women for a Mahjong tournament. Players donated to Backpack Society.
