Second in command

DCSO Undersheriff
Jason Kennedy

Jason Kennedy was appointed Undersheriff of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) in July 2025, after more than three decades of law enforcement and public safety experience in Douglas County.

The undersheriff is second in command (next in line after Sheriff Darren Weekly) and responsible for all duties of the DCSO. The role includes leading and monitoring all divisions and the more than 650 DCSO employees.

Jason has a strong leadership background. He started with the DCSO in 1992 and over the decades worked through many departments. His positions included: commander of the South Metro Drug Task Force, leader of the Professional Standards office, and co-commander of the Douglas County Regional SWAT Team. After a brief stint with Douglas County government human resources, Jason returned to DCSO as chief of staff before becoming undersheriff.

As undersheriff, Jason is always at work or on call. “The sheriff’s office does not have the luxury of hitting a pause button. Operations continue around the clock to ensure the community is always protected,” Jason explained. His workday begins before 6 a.m. and often lasts more than 12 hours.

Much of the job is about people: supporting supervisors, mentoring future leaders, reviewing internal matters, working with county and community partners, organizations and individuals. “While no two days are the same, the role is ultimately about service and making sure the sheriff’s office remains professional, transparent and responsive to the community it serves, even during challenging or unexpected moments,” Jason said.

While the constant nature of the job can be taxing on Jason, he loves helping others thrive in their roles, creating community partnerships and ensuring safety throughout the many corners of our large county.

“It is an honor to serve our community and to support the dedicated professionals of the sheriff’s office. I truly appreciate the strong support we receive from our community,” Jason said.

Jason has many accomplishments in his academic career. He attended Arapahoe Community College, where he completed the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy. He continued his studies in criminal justice, earning his associate’s degree. Later, Jason graduated from the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety Police Staff and Command School, the DEA Drug Unit Commander’s Academy and the prestigious FBI National Academy. In 2024, he completed the Leadership Program of the Rockies. Today, he is pursuing and nearing completion of a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Deeply passionate about family and his neighbors, Jason and his wife raised their children here in Douglas County. He is proud of his role in keeping the county a safe place to work, raise a family and thrive.

Jason enjoys fishing and spending time outside. He is fascinated with United States history, Douglas County history and historical U.S. currency.
