Dear Mrs. A.

Would you give us some etiquette tips for Halloween?

-Scary Mary in Hidden Pointe

Dear Mary,

Isn’t it a fun time of year, and aren’t we lucky to live in neighborhoods that enjoy and support Halloween festivities? Here are some ways to participate if you choose to:

Give trick or treaters a clear signal: if the porch light is on, all are welcome. And if the pumpkin is carved and lit there are treats to be had! If the lights are off, we are not participating.

If you’re offering treats, be fair and offer one or two pieces so everyone gets some. Be kind, don’t comment if kids are “too old.” If they show up politely, they are part of the fun. If you can, be allergy friendly and consider having a non-food option like small toys or stickers. Usually, a displayed teal pumpkin is a sign for allergy-friendly treats. See last year’s article on the meaning behind colored pumpkins: castlepinesconnection.com/the-meaning-behind-colored-pumpkins/

If you’re trick or treating, always be polite and say “trick or treat!” and “thank you.” Dress the part, even a simple effort (hat, mask, or face paint) makes it festive. And respect property: stick to walkways, don’t touch decorations, and only knock if the lights are on.

Parents don’t forget young children should always be with an adult and older kids should travel in groups. Stay on sidewalks, cross on corners and not between cars. A flashlight is always a good thing to carry.

Hosts don’t forget to clear your walkways, remove cords or hoses or decorations that people could trip on. Keep paths and steps well-lit to avoid accidents, and because costumes and strangers can be spooky to animals, make sure pets are safe and secure.

Bottom line, be polite, respectful, festive and safe and everyone can have a WONDERFUL HALLOWEEN!

Big Love, Mrs. A.
