November’s northern lights

There was chatter nationwide last month about the aurora borealis, the northern lights, which were visible in some of the lower 48 states on the night of November 11, an exceedingly rare occurrence.
Colorado was one of the lucky states and some viewers away from big city lights could see the majestic magenta and green lights with their naked eyes. Most of us here in Douglas County, however, had to take photos on our smart phones to “see” the lights.
Why? Smart phone cameras have a delayed exposure feature, sometimes called “night mode.” This involves the sensors gathering light over a longer exposure, just like using a slower shutter speed on a traditional camera. Additionally, some smart phones use image stacking, where they capture multiple photos in rapid succession and then blend them into a single photo.
Thank you to our 80108 neighbors who sent in these incredible photos.
