Paws, parks and Molson

Molson is a 2-year-old black German shepherd mix adopted from Humane Colorado’s Buddy Center in Castle Rock. He was one of eight puppies born to a German shepherd mother who is confirmed to be 100% pure bred, but shelter staff believe Molson may also have some Labrador retriever in him due to his body type and floppy ears.

Molson’s owner, Ava Lee and her boyfriend Larry, had been looking for another puppy to bring home to join Guinness, a 6-year-old German shepherd mix. Larry was not sure he wanted another dog but compromised as long as he could choose the breed. When he saw Molson, he thought he was beautiful, and Larry’s love of black dogs made him the ideal choice. Molson had a rough start health wise, but with attentive care from Ava and Larry, he has made a full recovery and settled in quickly.

Laid back by nature, Molson spent his first months alongside Guinness picking up good habits. Today he gets along well with other dogs and is calm, confident and easygoing. “He paws at me when he’s ready to walk, or when it’s snack time,” said Ava.

The couple loves to sample all kinds of beers and has a playful tradition of naming their dogs after their favorites, which explains Guinness and Molson. They live in The Canyons neighborhood, where daily walks on the neighborhood trails and outdoor adventures are just part of life.

Molson has large, erect ears that stand straight up, a gently sloping back, straight front legs and, like most German shepherds, his tail is full and bushy. While the breed usually has black and tan sable coats, Molson’s solid black coloring sets him apart.

Molson loves the outdoors, from hiking to trips to Cherry Creek State Park, where more than 100 acres of off-leash space give him room to roam. The couple bought a state parks pass so they could spend as much time as possible exploring. Water is a big draw for Molson and he is always up for a swim, but he is just as happy chasing rabbits and squirrels across the trails.

True to his breed, Molson is watchful and protective. He often stays close to Ava, observing his surroundings and keeping a careful eye on her. German shepherds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, courage and trainability, and Molson embodies all of these qualities. With his steady presence and loyal devotion, he is both a capable guardian and a loving family companion.
