Sense of Security celebrates 25 years

Loose Canon will perform again at the 2025 Splash of Pink on Saturday, October 18, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sense of Security. This nonprofit provides financial support to Coloradans facing major financial hardships during breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
To honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we return to shine a light on Sense of Security (SOS). This Denver-based nonprofit is celebrating 25 years of assisting Colorado breast cancer patients with a Splash of Pink celebration on Saturday, October 18 at the Cable Center in Denver. It is a remarkable milestone.

SOS supports patients facing major financial struggles during breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Assistance of $500 per month is provided for non-medical necessities like housing, groceries, transportation, utilities and more, for up to six months per stage of diagnosis. Over the years, more than 2,500 families across the state have been assisted through $2.6 million in financial support.
A profound example of impact: an unhoused woman with cancer, Rhonda, who applied for the SOS grant, was living in a tent in a friend’s backyard when her application came up from the wait list. Rhonda found a motel housing option, but it was more than the $500 per month limit. “I contacted the motel, negotiated a better monthly rate, and paid for five months of housing. Rhonda was able to recover in a safe, warm location, and the stability offered her the chance to find better housing and care,” shared Tim Taravella, SOS’s executive director.
In 2023, SOS expanded to provide mastectomy breast boxes, which include post-surgical support items like mastectomy pillows, recovery items like skin cream and advice documents. About 400 boxes have been distributed to date. The breast box program is open to all patients, regardless of financial situation.
The inspiration for SOS came in 1996. Donna Rogers shared with her friend and fellow breast cancer fighter Vicki Tosher that she would not have living expenses for a 12-week stretch. Some suggested Donna sell her house, a notion she and Vicki found heartbreaking.
After Donna’s passing at age 53, Vicki and Angela Ricker, founded SOS in Donna’s honor, so others can stay in their homes or in a safe and comfortable place during treatment and recovery. Sadly, Vicki has since lost her own battle to the disease.
“Knowing thousands have benefited from our services across the state brings a sense of pride and accomplishment to our board and surviving co-founder, Angela. Our gratitude to our donors and community supporters cannot be understated,” shared Tim.
The Splash of Pink event will feature music from Loose Cannon, food from Catering by Design, and an open bar with signature drinks from Barrel and Branch. Funds raised from the event will fund grants in 2026. Tickets are available for $150, or $250 for couples. Sponsorships starting at $1,500 with recognition and seating for 10 are still available. The Castle Pines Connection readers who register by October 10 can save $25 on tickets using the code CPC-25.
