Small needs and good deeds

Be the Good Ones finds ways to help in even the smallest of ways. “Small needs and good deeds” is the nonprofit’s tagline. It was co-founded in 2020 by Executive Director Erin Jones, Vice President Alex Yakubovich and President Leah Ryan.

The simple definition of “help” is to make it easier for someone by offering services or resources. The tagline for nonprofit Be the Good Ones (BTGO) says it all: “small needs and good deeds,” a focus to make meaningful impacts in even the slightest ways. The organization is led by three individuals and serves Douglas, Arapahoe and Elbert counties.

The story behind BTGO dates back to 2018 when Leah Ryan and Alex Yakubovich met at a networking event. A quick friendship formed surrounded by positive energy and a mutual desire to help others. They both have large social media followings and Leah, in particular, seemed to frequently stumble upon needs and was able to provide help by being a connector with her followers.

During that same time, Leah and Erin Jones sat together on the board for Parker Secret Closet, a place for teens to find donated homecoming and prom dresses and tuxedos. Leah, Erin and Alex became fast friends.

As the pandemic came into view, Leah found herself posting calming messages on Facebook. More and more needs became evident, so, when the Parker Secret Closet closed due to shut-downs, the three co-founded BTGO. Leah is president, Alex is co-president and Erin is executive director.

The simple beauty of this grassroots organization is that it meets people where they are and offers vetted opportunities for people to help in small ways. This might include helping with grocery shopping, running errands, doing minor house repairs or supporting a $5 giving campaign.

BTGO recently stepped in to help raise $2,000, by way of many people donating $5, for a disabled veteran who needed help with a down payment on a new car.

Another example is from early in the pandemic. A new mom with a sick baby needed infant Tylenol, which had disappeared from store shelves. BTGO connected someone who had the medication with the one in need. A volunteer picked up the medicine and delivered it.

Efforts are mostly handled in the organization’s Facebook group page, but a website update is underway that will provide event listings. The Facebook group page currently has 2,700 members.

In addition to simple asks, BTGO hosts annual food, toy, school supply and coat drives, as well as holiday adopt-a-family programs.

As for the impact small good deeds can make, Leah says that paving the path with a little effort can change a day or a life. “When you see the looks, have the conversations, you know it’s a huge relief,” she said. The three constantly encourage people to reach out to five friends and check-in.

BTGO hopes to gain more Facebook group members in Castle Pines, Castle Rock and beyond. Food and school supply drives are planned in June and July, respectively. Learn more about BTGO at bethegoodones.com or find them on Facebook.
