The brothers behind compassionate care for pets

Logan and Nate Heflebower, sons of the family that opened Heflebower Funeral & Cremation Services, were raised understanding the importance of compassion, grace and dignity both within funeral services and the larger community. The brothers were inspired to open up their own funeral business together in 2020, but for animals: A Paws in Time (APT), a pet cremation service.

“This passion for serving others and providing compassionate care is something we consider having been passed down,” Nate stated. “Growing up in a closer-knit community in Castle Pines and working in this type of industry, you meet many wonderful people in unique ways—oftentimes under incredibly difficult circumstances.”

In addition to cremation, APT offers pet burial and memorial services that ensure each animal is treated with the respect of a family member. The website provides resources for grief and family support as well as a place to write “opetuaries,” in remembrance.

As little ones, Logan and Nate lived across the street from Timber Trail Elementary and attended Buffalo Ridge Elementary and Rocky Heights Middle School.

Logan (29) graduated from Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) in 2014. Pursuing a degree in health and exercise science from Regis University, he also played baseball as a student athlete. Meeting his wife in college, a softball player, Logan married Courtney in 2022. Logan completed his master’s degree in health services administration.

Nate (25) graduated from RCHS in 2018, and also played baseball for his college, the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Earning a degree in communications, he met Taylor, a soccer player for the college, and the two bonded over being student athletes. They married last year.

While the two couples moved to the Northglenn neighborhood in Denver after their schooling, APT is in Highlands Ranch, where their father, Mike, first opened the family business.

Logan and Nate enjoy being at home, taking care of their gardens and are also outdoorsy. They still love to partake in a game of baseball and often gather with friends and family to stay involved in sports. Logan and Nate spend summers at the lake or in the mountains, hunting waterfowl and upland birds with their dogs Kai, a 7-year-old black lab, and Maven, a German shorthaired pointer puppy, respectively.

“We have always made it our mission to treat families and their beloved pets with the same dignity, care and respect we wish to receive,” concluded Nate. “We always hope that those we serve can truly feel the personal care of a family—much like a good neighbor.”
