Young pilot takes flight

Preston Clapper is all smiles after taking a plane for a spin during one of his lessons. He will attend University of North Dakota in the fall with a major in commercial aviation.
When you ask Preston Clapper at what age he set his sights on being a pilot, he will tell you it was as early as he can remember. Growing up in a military household with a dad who was an F-16 pilot in the Air Force was also pivotal.
“Aviation has always been a central part of my life. Growing up on various Air Force bases around the world exposed me to aviation from a young age,” Preston said. “It ignited a deep passion that has only grown over the years, leading me to pursue it as a career.”
Preston recently graduated from Rock Canyon High School and also took part in specialized flying classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at the DCSD Legacy Campus in Parker. Preston explained, “A lot of time spent was inside simulators. We got to work on takeoffs, landings, maneuvers and checklists to help better prepare for the real thing.”
Preston and his family moved to the Castle Valley neighborhood six years ago from New Mexico. He has soaked up all the state offers and has fallen in love with his community. Preston is one of three children. He has an older sister, Peightyn (20), at the University of Washington in Seattle and a younger sister, Paige (14) who will make the move into high school next year.
Outside of flying, Preston likes to camp, hike, travel and spend time with family and friends.
“My family has always been a strong support system for me. I’m so grateful for their encouragement,” Preston said. His next step is to the University of North Dakota in the fall to major in commercial aviation. He cannot wait to immerse himself in flight, knowing it will only fuel his passion.
Preston’s goal after college is to secure a position at an airline. “Flying gives me freedom to travel, which is something I’ve always valued,” he concluded. “The opportunity to explore new places while doing something I love is a huge motivator for me.”
