CrossFit Castle Pines opens its doors

On May 5, CrossFit Castle Pines will celebrate its grand opening. The new gym, or “box” as it is called in CrossFit lingo, is located in the Safeway shopping center. The gym has already been open for about a month, but the celebration will officially welcome adults and kids in the community to come try out a new way of working out – a Cinco de Mayo party with an emphasis on health and fitness.

CrossFit classes, which are held throughout the day, are limited to a maximum of 10 participants to allow coaches to give lots of individual attention and to foster friendships and friendly competition between athletes.

“I love the community aspect and camaraderie that comes with CrossFit,” said Deanna Driver, a CrossFit coach who co-owns the gym with Andy Russell. “When you come to CrossFit, there’s more of a personal training aspect to the workout. We make sure that people are using good form and moving well.”

CrossFit workouts are for everyone from novice to expert, and can accommodate even injured athletes. A typical session at the gym will include a warm up, then a skills practice to teach movement or increase strength, and finally the actual workout – referred to as a “WOD,” which means “workout of the day.” Nutrition coaching with an emphasis on eating whole foods with the proper balance of protein, fat and carbohydrates is an integral part of the process, too.

“The workouts are designed for the best athlete in the gym,” said Russell. “But we can then scale [modify] the workout for anyone, no matter what their fitness level is.”

Workout sessions begin at 5:30 a.m. on weekdays and are held throughout the day until 8 p.m. Saturday morning workouts are held at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., and are offered free of charge. CrossFit Castle Pines also hosts workouts designed for younger athletes through a program called “CrossFit Kids.”

“We are happy to be here in Castle Pines,” said Russell. “We’re excited to be a part of the community.”
