September Modern Manners

graphic for modern manners story

Dear Readers,

It’s that time of the year!  Are you making plans to head to the hills for the fall colors and the annual changing of the leaves?  Let’s take a minute to review the rules of the road.

We’ll start with the rules for descending the mountain:  Drive down the mountain in low gear or low range.  Apply brakes firmly to reduce speed.  Always stay on your side of the road and do not cut corners.  Remember that uphill traffic has the right of way at all times.

Avoid cruise control and maintain a safe distance.  Don’t pass unless it is absolutely necessary and don’t hug the centerline.  Don’t go down a mountain road any faster than you can go up it.  Don’t use your brakes to hold your downhill speed – down shift to S or L – the only time you should step on your brake pedal is to slow while you are shifting to a lower gear.  Resist the temptation to zoom down a hill.

Mind all posted speed limits and look for signs that warn you about the steep grades that may lie ahead.  Keep an eye out for animals, especially at night.  Make sure you have enough gas when traveling through remote areas.

Pack your snacks and remember to bring your water.  And if you’re on I-70 stay in the right lanes unless you’re passing.

Have fun and remember to pack out whatever you packed in.

Big Love and enjoy the sights!
