To celebrate a great year in the newspaper business, the staff of Buffalo Ridge Elementary School (BRE) online-student-run publication The Ridgeline was rewarded with a field trip to 5280 Magazine.

The fourth and fifth graders, two RCHS volunteers, as well as their teaching advisors, Shannon Herzog and Jennifer Wayne, were treated to a tour of 5280’s hip urban office space located in downtown Denver.

In addition to the tour, students met members of the 5280 staff and were given a rundown of what it takes to put together a monthly magazine. From selling advertisements to writing stories, to production and layout the students came away with a real sense of the work it takes to put together a publication as well as recognizing some similarities in producing The Ridgeline.

“Learning about the artwork in the magazine was pretty neat,” said Fionn Cool, Ridgeline staff writer.

The Ridgeline has been an online-student-run publication for the past three years. The first two years the paper was part of the school’s student council. The 2009-2010 school year is the first year the publication has been run as its own after school enrichment program.

Five issues of The Ridgeline were published during the school year. With stories from the school lunchroom snack cart to healthcare reform to movie reviews on “Avatar” the staff covered the news at BRE as well as the interests of its readership.
