More room for kids to shine on and off the stage

The Canyons resident Jodi Rosen has watched her 10-year-old son Brandon grow far beyond the stage. Brandon has taken classes at Performing Arts Academy (PAA) in Highlands Ranch for several years. He has developed his acting skills and, more importantly, gained confidence both on and off the stage. As the nonprofit celebrates its 20th anniversary, PAA has completed a 3,000-square-foot expansion at 5690 County Line Place. The addition brings the facility to more than 13,000 square feet and seven studios, including two new spaces for classes.

Brandon’s experience reflects PAA’s mission to build character, create community and inspire excellence through the transformative power of theater.

“Brandon went from being unsure about himself to, ‘This is me. I am going to be me. I’m going to do it. You can like it or not. This is who I am,’” Jodi said. “He loves going there. It’s his favorite place.”

Founded in 2006 with just 26 children in its first summer program, PAA now serves more than 2,700 children through year-round programming, which includes backstage, onstage, and in positions like director, choreographer, management, design and technical.

“The Performing Arts Academy exists to help young people become who they are meant to be,” said founder and Executive Director Dr. James Ramsey, known as “Dr. Jim” to everyone. “Performing arts is a path for technical skills when it comes to voice and acting, but it is truly how we help them grow into themselves.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Jim said PAA plans to strengthen partnerships with local businesses, community organizations and schools to reach more children. The organization’s October gala raised nearly $200,000 to support its work and continued growth.
