The Elevated Edit – November 2026

Dear Reader,

Just a little column about pumpkins on the porch. Because of wildlife (mostly deer and squirrels), most of us have switched to faux pumpkins for our outdoor fall decor. But this year, with the bears on the prowl, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has a concern and recommendation for real pumpkins on display.

Colorado bears are in the middle of a fall feeding frenzy called hyperphagia and a plump pumpkin reads as a tasty snack. I know it’s a hassle, but Parks and Wildlife is asking us to bring our gourds in at night or to create a window display that will be admired from outside. You don’t want bears at the front door! And keep in mind that feeding wildlife is illegal in Colorado and can get you a $100 fine.

Lastly, dispose of your pumpkins properly by placing them in your regular trash or composting them after removing the non-organic decor, like wax, glitter, etc. There is a free composting event for City of Castle Pines residents on Saturday, November 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Elk Ridge Park.

Out here doing our best!

Big Love,
Mrs. A.
