Let’s talk about hat etiquette. It’s that time of year and where I come from, in Texas (regarding western hats), we would follow the traditional rule of wearing felt from Labor Day to Memorial Day where we would break out the straw. There’s an old saying that the old guard still goes by: “no straw before Easter.” In Colorado, with our elevation and weather swings, a lot of people follow the temperature rather than the calendar. The felt comes out with the cool and wet weather and the straw stays away until it is reliably warm again.
Now let’s talk about hats in general. Remove hats indoors, in restaurants, offices, homes and for the national anthem, a meal at the table and when being introduced to someone. Traditionally, women could keep a dressy hat on indoors as the hat is considered part of the outfit.
If you’re wearing a hat at a bar or a restaurant, it’s becoming increasingly acceptable casually, but the higher end the venue, the more it will stand out.
