March is time for annual Empty Bowl event

By Birgit Moran

Every March for the past twelve years, the Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center conducts an evening of food, music, silent auction and ticket holders’ choice of hundreds of artisan made pottery bowls to raise money in support of its many programs and shelter.

The event originated from the idea that “an empty bowl is left at the table every time a victim flees domestic violence.” Since the inception of the center’s largest annual fund raising event, it has grown in size.

The venue takes place at the Douglas County Fairgrounds complex. Bowls are thrown, painted and glazed by local artists, high school students, recreation center pottery classes, and other volunteers who donate their artfully created bowls for this event. Local restaurants donate soups and breads with unlimited sampling allowed.

While there are a plenty of tables and chairs, attendees tend to be up and down quite a bit to browse the silent auction items and view and select the bowl of their choice. Once all ticket holders have selected their bowl, a frenzy of buying the extras occurs with pricing dependant on quantity. Many are seen courting several bowls stacked on their arms as gifts or for their own collections.

Executive Director Jennifer Walker often speaks about the many services the center provides and about the surprising fact that domestic violence is the number one crime in Douglas and Elbert counties.

Among the services the Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center provides are: A 24-hour crisis line, a 28-bed emergency shelter, adult and child therapy, legal advocacy, school-based outreach, and community outreach.
