In April, Buffalo Ridge Elementary (BRE) will once again celebrate an entire month devoted to promoting literacy throughout the school.

On April 2, the students at BRE will be inspired to become great spellers with the Spelling Challenge kick-off assembly. Last year, parent members from the Buffalo Ridge Education Alliance (BREA), the parent teacher organization at the school, as well as teachers and staff performed a spelling skit that motivated the kids to try his or her best to be
awesome spellers.

“We will be kicking off the Spelling Challenge with a fun-filled, educational and inspirational assembly for the BRE kids and staff,” said Tammy Abramovitz, BRE parent and skit producer.

“The skit this year will include lots of laughs and many “spells” will be cast. I love being a part of something that includes curriculum and fundraising for our school,” Abramovitz continued.

The Spelling Challenge is a unique fundraising event. Students are given a list of grade appropriate spelling words, as well as a list of challenge words to take home and study for the month.

In addition to learning to spell the words, students also ask friends and family to sponsor a monetary amount for each word spelled correctly. Last year the event raised $6,800 that went straight to the teacher’s classroom startup fund.

According to Carrie Manion, BREA president, “The money raised from the Spelling Challenge will once again be given to each teacher to get classrooms ready for the 2010-2011 school year.”

Not only will students be inspired to spell his or her best, they will also get to dress as a word. On Dictionary Day, students choose a word from the dictionary and then dress the part. From dapper to disheveled, students, teachers and staff all dress the part for the day.

Other literacy awareness events happening at BRE include the spring book fair Book Fair Diner – All You Can Read. The fair will be open April 12 and run through April 15 (see the article on page 28 for more information). The BREA will also host a family night on April 22 focused on literacy awareness.
