Hydrant flushing keeps water system sound
Starting in April, Castle Pines North Metro District (CPNMD) began an important annual maintenance activity that helps ensure safe, reliable drinking water for the community: fire hydrant flushing. While it may initially seem like a waste of water, this process plays a critical role in maintaining the overall health of the water system. Flushing maintenance projects will be completed in July.
Hydrant flushing works by pushing water at an increased velocity through water mains, clearing out mineral buildup, such as iron, that can accumulate over time. Removing these deposits helps improve water clarity, maintain disinfection and support overall system performance. CPNMD flushes its hydrants annually and plans to finish the process in July.
In addition to improving water quality, flushing is coordinated with regular hydrant maintenance. This ensures that hydrants are functioning properly and ready to perform when needed during emergencies. Keeping hydrants in working order is essential for fire protection across the community.
Residents may notice temporary changes during flushing, including slight discoloration of water or brief drops in water pressure. While this may be disconcerting, the effects are short-lived and harmless. In most cases, running cold water for a few minutes will quickly restore normal conditions. Most importantly, the water remains safe to drink throughout the process.
CPNMD appreciates residents’ patience and cooperation as crews complete this essential work.
