Get ready … get set … Mission Green!

Third graders from Mrs. Brester’s class display custom made windmills for their “wind power” Mission Green Science Fair project.

Have you heard about Mission Green? Well, if you haven’t, it is Buffalo Ridge Elementary’s (BRE) first-ever science fair! All students at BRE will get to participate. Kindergarten through third graders will be competing against each other, and fourth and fifth graders will be competing against each other. It’s all happening on Thursday, April 26, in the school’s gym.

Kristi Feret, third grade teacher, is in charge of the science fair. She is not a permanent teacher at BRE, but has been a long-term substitute for Mrs. Brester’s class this year. Ms. Feret says, “I want to get kids excited about science and get them to explore what interests them.” Mrs. Brester’s third grade class is already doing a project to help all students get excited.

Mrs. Brester’s class is testing wind power with windmills. The students created cardboard windmills with three, four and five blades. The test is to see which windmill has the most rotations with the same amount of wind power, created by an electric fan. Each windmill was decorated with different colors and they looked great. The class worked really hard. Some of the students, Kyle, Hadley and Andrew said, “We are very excited about the science fair.”

Kindergarten through third grades will do class projects and fourth and fifth graders will have the option of doing an individual project. The kick-off assembly is on March 1 and the deadline to enter is April 6. Good luck science kids!

Ms. Feret shared that she is looking forward to the fourth and fifth graders being role models for the younger kids. Science experts from the community will be judging the science fair. They will be looking for background information, a good research question, lots of data, testing that it works, and most of all – creativity.

There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies for the fourth and fifth graders. The winning kindergarten through third grade class will also receive a trophy and each of the participants will receive a ribbon. It seems like a lot of fun, so go to BRE to see the science projects on April 26.
