Local 10-year-old Represents Colorado at Midwest Swim Meet

Abby Kochevar

by Carin Kirkegaard

Castle Pines North (CPN) resident, Abby Kochevar, age 10 was selected to represent the state at the 25th Annual Midwest Regional All-Star Invitational Swim Meet held January 17-18 in Lawrence, Kansas. Colorado finished in first place, a long standing record for the state.

At the meet, Kochevar competed in six individual events and two relays. She placed in every event she swam, bettering her personal times in four of her six events. She placed first in the 50 meter freestyle and third in the 100 meter backstroke. In the freestyle relay, Kochevar and the rest of the team took first place.

While swimming for the Rock, a year-round competitive swim team that practices at the Castle Rock Recreation Center, Kochevar swam the 50 meter freestyle in 28:50 seconds, the fastest of any 10 year-old girl in all of Colorado. In addition, Kochevar also finished in the top ten in the 50 meter backstroke, 50 meter butterfly, 100 meter freestyle and the 100 meter backstroke.

Kochevar has been swimming competitively for just over two years and she has found a love for the sport. She began swimming with the CPN summer swim team the Castle Crocs. The summer team only wet Kochevar’s taste for more and after competing over the summer she made the move to join the Rock.
