Teen passion for fall fashion

Sara Cave proved that an oversized olive sweater atop a black dress can never go wrong, not this season anyway.

Fashion isn’t just about clothing: it is about shoes, makeup, hair, scent, accessories, and displaying who you are.  As the famous designer Miuccia Prada said, “Fashion is an instant language.”

The transition from summer to fall in terms of wardrobe is considered one of the most heightened points in fashion importance.  The flux from late summer hues such as pastel pink to the early autumn adumbration of chroma ranging from matte maroon to adhesive olive are so vastly important and so often underestimated.  Trends are constantly shifting, and in order to keep up with what would be frowned upon by an elite designer and what they would applaud can call for some rather meticulous attention and work.

Here are my thoughts on some seasons guidelines; it is absolutely acceptable to wear white after Labor Day!  The fad of not doing so originated in the 1800s in New York City to separate the wealthy and pride-induced blood lines from the upper middle class, but as New York City grew and many industries expanded, the line between the ultra elite and the newly inaugurated citizens of extreme wealth blurred, causing the amusement of class system dressing to dim.  Some old-schoolers may not agree, but expect to see white at RCHS late into the fall.

Even though the 1800s are out, the 19th century is in!  Victorian styles are sweeping the runways with elegant hem lines and intricate jewelry.  Last fall, chunky necklaces were all the craze but have yet to show up anywhere this season, so stick with high class jewelry and you’ll be considered high-fashion (at least this fall).

Stay away from khakis (unless you’re a guy).  Let’s be real – unless you’re attempting to match Jake from State Farm then there is absolutely no reason to not flatter yourself.  Even though traditional khakis are a no-go, the khaki color is raging.  Khaki-colored trench coats were popping up all over New York’s Fashion Week runways.

High heels are never a bad idea, however, the type of heel you choose has the ability to dictate the vibe of your whole outfit.  Do not wear pumps (or flip-flops) in the fall.  Any other season they’re considered chic and fun but this fall is a time for stilettos and high rider boots that rise above the knee.

Stay away from mom jeans (sorry, moms), but even Versace, Acne Studios, Vionnet, Rodarte, and Givenchy are pushing high-waisted everything.  From jeans to skirts, extending a little above the belly button exaggerates your silhouette and gives the illusion of long, lean legs and a small mid-section.  Who doesn’t want that?

Pull your inspiration from the weather and your environment. RCHS student Claire Green mentioned, “The chilly days inspire my attire.”  Let whatever drives you influence how you decide to dress this season.

Stay away from blinged-out jeans and change things up a bit.  Versace, Acne Studios, Vionnet, Rodarte, and Givenchy are pushing high-waisted everything.  From jeans to skirts to shorts, extending a little above the belly button exaggerates your silhouette and gives the illusion of long, lean legs and a small mid-section.  Who doesn’t want that?
