Town of Castle Rock aproves underpass for North Meadows Extension

by Elizabeth Wood West

The Town of Castle Rock is pressing on with its North Meadows Extension project and public interest remains as strong as ever. After a well-attended open house in September, town officials are now advertising for a design consultant and will begin actual project design by the end of the year. At their October 25 meeting, town council members approved the staff-recommended underpass option, a less-visually-impacting but slightly more expensive underpass design.

Town Engineering Manager Dale Wegner said, “We hope to have preliminary plans by next April and will start right-of-way acquisition at that time.” However, the Town must submit an Interstate Access Request (IAR) to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) for approval in order to construct the North Meadows Extension interchange on I-25.

Town officials are currently completing the IAR, which will include the underpass design, to be submitted late this year. Final approval from FHWA and CDOT is expected in the spring of 2012. The Town is continuing to work on financing for the project and construction may begin in 2013.
