Vandalism – What it is, and How to Prevent it

by Terri Wiebold

What is vandalism?

Vandalism as we know it is legally defined as Criminal Mischief, and is outlined by Colorado Revised Statute CRS 18-4-501. The definition, roughly stated, is unlawfully and knowingly damaging the real or personal property of someone or something. The amount of damage caused determines the classification of the crime as either a misdemeanor or a felony, and the severity of the punishments. Punishment for criminal mischief could be a fine, criminal probation, or jail time.

How does vandalism hurt the Castle Pines community?

Vandalism left unaddressed in any community sends the message that there is a lack of pride and responsibility of ownership in the community. It often is an invitation for other more serious forms of crime. Vandalism clean up is expensive and drains resources that might otherwise be used for different community projects. Vandalism can also have a psychological impact on the community’s sense of security.

How can vandalism be prevented?

Prevention in our community begins with education, and every resident can play a part. The most effective way to prevent vandalism is to be aware of surroundings and report suspicious activity immediately to the proper authorities. If vandalism is found and reported, it should be removed promptly. It is important to send a message to the perpetrators that this behavior is not tolerated and will be addressed right away.

What should someone do if vandalism is spotted?

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office takes crime in the Castle Pines community very seriously. It will actively and aggressively pursue those who vandalize our community. Report any found vandalism or graffiti immediately to the Sheriff’s Office at 303-660-7500. Report it even if the graffiti is on property that is public such as utility boxes or street signs. Do not remove it until a deputy has come out and taken a report and pictures.

Who is responsible for vandalism repairs and graffiti removal?

A property owner is responsible for graffiti removal on his or her own property, while the City of Castle Pines North Public Works Department is responsible to clean anything in the public right of way within the city, including sidewalks, street signs, etc. They can be reached at 303-705-0200. The Castle Pines North Metro District is responsible for graffiti removal from all District owned facilities such as equipment and facilities at parks. They can be reached at 303-688-8550. Douglas County Public Works Department continues to cover unincorporated portions of Douglas County, and they can be reached at 303-688-9343. Residents in Castle Pines Village should contact the Emergency Services Office 303-688-6447.

The Castle Pines community has worked hard to keep our neighborhoods clean and free of vandalism and graffiti. If every resident plays a part in watching for – and reporting – suspicious activity in neighborhoods, the beauty of Castle Pines can be maintained and preserved.
