The first day of school was exciting for the students at Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) as they entered the front door and were welcomed into the school by the entire staff cheering for them with purple pom-poms. This annual tradition at RHMS is all part of the fun and excitement of starting a new school year by greeting old and new teachers and friends.

Though many traditions and core values at RHMS have remained the same, there are many changes and innovations that the staff are looking forward to this year. Jon Veit, who served as the administrative dean last year, was promoted to assistant principal. Veit will serve as the eighth grade administrator, and new hire Kathryn Teel will serve as the new administrative dean and seventh grade administrator. Many outstanding new teachers have also joined the staff and are looking forward to bringing their expertise and creative learning techniques to the school.

This year, RHMS is leading the way in 21st century learning at the middle school level by introducing the “Personal Device Initiative.” Students will be allowed to bring their own technology devices such as smart phones, iPads, laptops and other devices to school to use in the classroom. “I am excited about this year,” Principal Mike Loitz remarked. “We are trying to cross the divide and make learning real world and authentic to our kids. Why make what they use and do at home all day against the rules at school?  We are attempting to tap into the skills, expertise, excitement, and power of today’s student.”

Additionally, RHMS is partnering with Discovery Education, which provides digital media content to students and allows them to experience a vast array of information in areas of social studies, science and math. To learn more, visit www.RockyHeights.org.
