The Castle Pines Storm swim team begins practice later this month and will be swimming in a new division. After Coach Christina Kwon led the team to an undefeated season in the Mountain Hi Swim League’s “D” division last year, they’ve been promoted.

“It’s been really exciting to see the team grow since its inception five years ago,” said Gwen Karaba, who sits on the Storm’s board. “Our first season with Coach Kwon, we won one meet. So to go from that to winning every meet has been great.”

With the new division comes competition against new teams and meets in new pools. But one thing that will remain the same is the emphasis on fun and personal improvement.

“All the swim meets have a theme, like ‘super hero day’ or ‘Hawaiian day’ to keep them fun,” said Karaba. “The coach pushes them hard but they have a great time.”

The Storm will host a parent information meeting to kick off the season on May 4 at the Castle Pines Community Center, 7404 Yorkshire Drive. Returning families will meet from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m., and new families will meet from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Practices are held weekdays at the HOA 1 pool, 7233 Tenby Way (times vary according to age groups). Meets are held on Saturdays beginning on May 31.
