In December of 2011, the Colorado Supreme Court ended a decade-long battle between Republicans and Democrats. It is a battle fought every ten years, and the outcome can often decide which party remains in power for the near future.

This never-ending cycle is known as redistricting, and it is a process that is designed to make the populations in every congressional district equal to one another. Every state is subject to these changes in electoral boundaries, and they can have very important implications for the people living in certain districts. This is the predicament Colorado voters – and, specifically, voters in the Castle Pines community – will find themselves in when they head to the ballot boxes this coming November.

According to the law, the legislatures of each state are required to reapportion districts. However, Colorado’s legislature failed to do this in 2010, and the issue was taken to the Colorado Supreme Court. Due to the changes made to these boundaries, many cities in Colorado will gain new representatives.

Residents of Colorado Congressional District 6 (an area which included Aurora, Highlands Ranch, the Castle Pines community, Castle Rock, and Parker, along with several other municipalities) elected Mike Coffman to serve as their Representative to the U.S. Congress in 2010. While Coffman’s term is up this election cycle, residents of what used to be Congressional District 6 will not find his name on the ballot in November.

According to the reapportioned congressional boundaries, District 6 has been reduced to Aurora and some of the surrounding South Denver area, as well as Highlands Ranch. Castle Rock, Castle Pines, and Parker are now included in Congressional District 4, which encompasses much of Colorado’s Western Plains.

U.S. Representative Cory Gardner, who has been serving District 4, will take over Representative Coffman’s responsibilities in representing much of Douglas County. Representative Gardner, a conservative who served in the Colorado State Legislature before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, currently resides in Yuma, Colorado with his wife and two children. Gardner is also a fifth generation resident of Colorado and his family’s ties to the state date back to the late 1800’s.

Due to the redistricting that has taken place, it is crucial that citizens of Douglas County get to know Congressman Gardner and where he stands on the issues, as he is up for re-election this year.

“I’m very excited to get to know the people of Douglas County and meet everybody,” Representative Gardner said. He also said that he believes his values will be “right at home with the people of Douglas County.”
