Late start on Fridays for DCSD elementary and middle school students
Beginning this school year, Friday mornings will look a little different for students and teachers in the Douglas County School District (DCSD). Elementary and middle schools will now join high schools in starting school 45 minutes later every Friday, beginning August 21.
“This dedicated time will be used for Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), allowing our teachers to collaborate and ensure we are providing the highest quality instruction for every student,” said Paula Hans, DCSD public information officer.
During PLC time, teachers review student progress, share teaching strategies, and work together to improve instruction. This time is for teacher collaboration, not for grading or individual planning. Friday late starts for PLC time have already been in place at DCSD high schools for the past three years.
Community feedback from DCSD’s 2025 strategic plan survey showed support for adding PLC time to lower grades. Fifty-two percent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed it should be a priority. In January 2026, DCSD staff presented a plan to the Board of Education, noting that neighboring districts, including Cherry Creek, Littleton and Jefferson County, also employ the program.
All school buses, including special education transportation, will run 45 minutes later on Fridays. Elementary students will still have access to Before and After School Education on Friday mornings.
Families may need to adjust their Friday morning routines, including childcare, transportation and activities affected by the later start and should check with their schools for specific information. DCSD charter schools are not included in the Friday late start program.
If a weather delay occurs on a Friday, PLC time will be canceled.
