Game, set, matches

The Village at Castle Pines tennis teams had a great season. JoAnn DelMonte’s (second from right) 6.5 mixed doubles team finished first in league play and advanced to district playoffs on September 18-19 at Denver Tennis Park.

It was a season full of tennis rallies, poaches and aces in The Village at Castle Pines (CPV). Liz Bauer is the neighborhood’s Tennis Activities Group Chairperson and United States Tennis Association faculty coordinator. She provided a thorough recap of the fun the competition had during the past few months.

In total, Liz said CPV fielded 36 teams across mens and womens levels 2.5 through 4.0, plus mixed doubles. Three new teams joined the competition—a men’s 65+, 7.0 doubles team and two mixed doubles, 8.0 teams (18 and over and 40 and over). A new challenge ladder brought out friendly neighborhood play and Saturday drills were available for all.

Several teams advanced to district or sectional playoffs this season, extending play beyond regular season:

The 55 and over 6.0 women’s team, captained by Susan Boerema, came in first place in league play and advanced to districts. The team came in second place at districts with a 1-2 team loss in the final round, both losses in the form of tight tie-breaks.

The 40 and over 7.0 mixed doubles team, captained by Carol Lail, came in second place in league play and received a wildcard to play districts, but lost 0-3.

The 40 and over women’s 4.0 team, captained by Britney Anderson, came in first place in league play and advanced to districts, winning 4-0. They battled it out at sectionals but lost 1-3.

The 6.5 mixed doubles team, captained by JoAnn DelMonte, finished first in league play and advanced to districts September 18-19. They lost 0-3 despite a hard fought battle.

Players routinely share with Liz that they love coming to CPV to play, because it is so beautiful and the courts are so well maintained. “We hosted an impressive 120 matches this season—that’s 120 opportunities to showcase our hospitality, neighborhood and tennis courts,” shared Liz.

Saturday drills will continue until November, weather permitting. There is buzz about a new women’s 65 and over team in 2027. Stay tuned!
