DCS Montessori building healthier hearts

By Tracy Dudley

Every year, excited DCS Montessori students get moving for the Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) program. Sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA), fundraising from JRFH supports the AHA mission of reducing disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. In fact, the AHA recently stated their impact goal is to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by twenty-five percent by 2010.

This past month, DCS Montessori staff dedicated much time to educating students of all ages about the risk factors for heart disease, teaching them healthy habits that can last a lifetime and getting them involved in fun and heart-healthy activities. Additionally, one of the school’s own students,
kindergartner Max Simon, was introduced as a Heart Hero who recently had surgery to repair his own heart.

On February 4 and 5, one hundred percent of DCS Montessori students jumped for 15 minutes, alternating a few minutes of jumping with a few minutes of fun facts focused on encouraging kids to keep their bodies healthy for a lifetime.

“At last check, DCS Montessori was in the top three of 12 Castle Rock area schools as far as total dollars raised this year,” said PE instructor Bruce Berning.

A big kudos to Mr. Bruce and parent volunteer coordinator Barb Wendell for organizing this wonderful event for such a great cause.
