Getting fit for free; Teen finds new use for playground equipment

Playkgound equipment is typically meant for young children. Unfortunately, older kids and teens sometimes misuse it or leave unwanted graffiti and trash. Local teen George Byrne has discovered a very positive use for the playground equipment located in the HOA2 neighborhood of Castle Pines.

Last summer, Byrne came up with the idea to use the equipment as a circuit-training workout center and has used the equipment ever since.

A senior at Rock Canyon High School, Byrne works hard to stay in shape and be healthy. He plays football in the fall, snowboards in the winter and, this year, will swim in the spring rather than play his traditional spring sport, lacrosse. In addition to the time spent at practices and with his recreational activities, Byrne spends an hour each day exercising.

His routine starts with a three-mile run around the neighborhood. Once finished, he stops at the HOA2 playground and embarks on 30-minutes of circuit training. Using the monkey bars, slide, rings, rocks, and stair handles, Byrne does mega doses of push-ups, pull-ups, shoulder raises and dips. “I work-out until I can’t work out anymore,” said Byrne.

Noting the lack of membership dues and convenience to his house, Byrne thinks using the equipment for exercise is a no-brainer. “It’s free and it’s good for your body – so why not?”
