Outstanding Jag for 2011

Article by Kathy Dunker

The Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) Principal’s Jaguar Award represents the top senior that demonstrates outstanding commitment to leadership, citizenship, academics, athletics and activities. Many students are nominated but only one is selected.  This year’s award went to Matthew Morgan who will be honored with a perpetual plaque displayed in the main office.

Morgan graduated with the highest academic honors and as Salutatorian of his class with a GPA of 4.40. With a record of straight A’s and completion of twelve Advanced Placement courses, Morgan earned 27 credits for graduation instead of the required 25.5.

RCHS Principal, Kim Rauh, remarked, “Matt understands commitment and demonstrates that every single day.  He is a personable, yet quiet, hard working, focused young man that is a role model for others and a leader to all.”

Awarded with the AP Scholar with Distinction, member of the National Honor Society and Future Business Leaders of America, and serving as a mentor for incoming freshmen for two years are just a few of Morgan’s many achievements while at RCHS.  His most notable accomplishment was being named Commended Student for the National Merit Scholarship Program for his exceptional PSAT score.

In addition to his academic success, Morgan played soccer for four years, earned a varsity letter for two of those years, and was the team captain during his senior year.

Rauh continued, “What sets Matt apart from his peers is his genuine sincerity, quiet leadership, and ability to remain humble. He has assumed total responsibility for his education and participation at Rock Canyon.  He simply is a quality person that stands for ethics and integrity. Rock Canyon is a better place because of Matt.”
