Wargin’s Wacky W Cycling Event supports schools

by Elean Gersack

Tune your bike, strap your helmet, and get set for the Wacky W Cycling event on Saturday, September 10, at Rocky Heights Middle School. This first-time event will directly benefit Douglas County Schools.

Avid cyclists parents of Douglas County students, along with 9News sports reporter Susie Wargin and her brother Ted, created the event. “The Wacky W came about because we both have children in Douglas County schools and wanted to find a creative way to raise funds, while also giving people a fun opportunity to exercise and spend a memorable day with their family and/or friends,” said Wargin.

There are three course options to choose from: The Family Course (7 miles); Long Course (34 miles); and Longer Course (58 miles). The Long and Longer events will have a rolling start between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. and the Family event will have a rolling start between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Note: For safety reasons, no bike trailers are permitted during the race; only registered riders and his/her bicycle.

$10 from every Long and Longer registration and $5 from every Family registration will be distributed to the participant’s designated school. The Douglas County Education Foundation’s “Fill the Gap Fund” will receive the proceeds from riders without a school preference. As an added bonus, participating Chipotle restaurants will donate fifty percent (50%) of their sales during “Packet Pick-Up” on Saturday, September 3, to the top three participating schools.

Following the event, riders will enjoy an expo with food vendors and many Douglas County school business supporters. Participants will also collect a number of Wacky W goodies to take home, including a choice of hat, visor or beanie and Toyko Joe’s tote bag filled with freebies.

“We have witnessed how much an event can benefit an organization and how good people feel when they finish.  Our goal is for every rider to walk away with a smile knowing they helped their school, burned some calories, and met some new neighbors in their community,” said Wargin.

Register early! Now through July 11 enjoy early bird registration fees of $25 (Family Course); $50 (Long Course) and $60 (Longer Course). Fees will increase by $5 increments several times until the day of the event when fees become $40, $75 and $85, respectively. Hurry! The first 500 registered riders will receive an extra gift.
