Sunday, May 20, at Butterfield Park was no ordinary day. A whopping 484 kids participated in the seventh annual Tri the Rock Kid’s Triathlon, which adds up to 108 more kids than last year’s tri! The event raised nearly $5,000 for area physical education programs, as $10 of each entry fee went directly to the students’ school.

The 5/6-year-old group competed in a 25 meter swim, a one kilometer bike ride, and a 500 meter run. Both the 7/8 and 9/10-year-old groups swam 50 meters, followed by a four kilometer bike ride and a one kilometer run. And last but not least, the 11/12 and 13/14-year olds started off with a 100 meter swim, with an eight kilometer bike ride and a two kilometer run.

The winning school gets the honor of displaying the travelling trophy until next year’s Tri. And they are back at it at Soaring Hawk Elementary in the Meadows who won the trophy for the seventh year in a row! Participating athletes from Soaring Hawk will get a pizza party at the Castle Rock Recreation Center’s leisure pool later this summer.

Soaring Hawk Elementary School had the most participants again this year, winning the Tri the rock school challenge. The school has won the challenge each year during the event’s seven-year history. The school’s name will be displayed on a traveling trophy, which will be housed at the school until next year. Participating athletes also earned the pizza party at the recreation center’s leisure pool.

CPNII resident, Reiley Orgill, took 13th place in the boys 9/10-year-old category out of 88 athletes. Orgill commented, “It was so much fun! I can’t wait to do another triathlon!”
