In early August, at a special Parks Authority board meeting, the board unanimously voted to award the contract for building Elk Ridge Park – located on the west side of Lagae Road just south of Castle Pines Parkway – to Colorado DesignScapes.

DesignScapes has done work for Denver Public Schools and is a local company based in Centennial. One important aspect the board felt was prudent when awarding the contract was to use a local company that would provide a high standard for the money.

“Our park architect, Design Concepts, has worked with Colorado DesignScapes on many projects and we are excited to get started,” noted Anna Mallinson, president of the Castle Pines Parks Authority. “We’re hoping to start construction in late September.”

This will be Colorado’s first multi-generational and multi-accessible park. Design Concepts is working on another park of this nature in Colorado, but Elk Ridge Park will be constructed first. “We have our fingers crossed for good weather, and a mild winter so we can complete the park in 2011,” explained Axel Bishop of Design Concepts.

“These new generation of parks being created in Colorado, and even nationwide, recognizes family play, all-generation play and multi-ability play as a very important part of children’s activities. We are leaders in this movement in Colorado. This park is a significant step in addressing all of these forms of recreation in a single social and recreational area. This is a great necessity” stated Bishop.

The Parks Authority meets the third Thursday of the month at the Castle Pines North community center. Meetings are open to the public.
