Flag Day June 14!

Flag Day is held every year on June 14. The holiday, signed into law in 1949 by President Harry Truman, is a national day of patriotism and pride. Though the holiday has been “official” for just 61 years, it has been observed throughout the country since the 1800s. At a time when many immigrant school children were new to the country, they were encouraged to learn more about their country and show their national pride by learning about the flag. Soon, education departments across the country held such observances. The date of June 14 was selected in honor of the Continental Congress’ adoption of the Flag’s design in June of 1777.

When you display your colors this June, remember the following:

    – Flags should be flown from sunrise to sunset or illuminated during the hours of darkness.
-Only all-weather flags should be flown during inclement weather.
-Never let the flag touch the ground.
-When a flag is worn out or otherwise no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way.
