During March and April, students at Buffalo Ridge Elementary School (BRE) helped cap off a year full of great character. Congratulations to those receiving the honor of being recognized as their classroom character winner for the month!
On May 20, another special character honor was bestowed. Local author, Justin Mattot, who helped kick off the character education program early in the school year, came back to celebrate the great character at BRE and to read a chapter from his next book, “Gabriel Peters and the Summer of Mysteries: Stories from the Crawl Space.” Within the pages he read were the names of three BRE fifth grade students, Rebecca Teeter, Mitch Baggett and Christina Iverson. Mattot included the three as new characters in his book series dedicated to standing up to bullying.
A former bully target turned writer, Mattot proudly awarded the well-deserving students not only a place in this book, but likely as mainstay characters for the duration of the series. Mattot encouraged the three to their take great character to middle school next year and share it with others. He also applauded the efforts of the entire student body and encouraged all to look up to Rebecca, Mitch and Christina as role models.
