State recognition for academic excellence
The Colorado Department of Education recognized several Douglas County School District schools for high academic achievement with performance awards for the 2025-26 school year. Administrators from winning schools accepted their awards at the State of Douglas County School District event on May 4.
Rock Canyon High School (RCHS) received the High School Academic Growth Award, the only high school in Douglas County to qualify. This award highlights high schools that demonstrate the highest levels of student academic growth in reading, writing and math. RCHS also received the John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award (John Irwin), an award granted to schools that demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over time, specifically those that rate as exceeding expectations for more than three years.
“I could not be more proud that RCHS has once again been recognized with the John Irwin award, an honor we have earned every year it has been awarded,” stated RCHS principal Andy Abner. “Receiving this and the High School Growth Award is a reflection of far more than test scores; the awards represent the relentless dedication of our students, the extraordinary commitment of our staff and the unwavering support of our community.”
Timber Trail Elementary received the John Irwin as well as the Governor’s Distinguished Award, an award given to schools that demonstrate exceptional student growth at all grade levels. American Academy, Buffalo Ridge Elementary and Rocky Heights Middle School also won the John Irwin.
