If your green thumbs are itching to get outside this spring and start digging in the dirt, take heart. The Douglas County Conservation District (DCCD) is now accepting orders for its annual seedling shrub and tree program.

This popular program has been available to Douglas County residents for the past twenty years. DCCD offers a large variety of shrubs, deciduous, and coniferous seedling trees each year, working in cooperation with the Colorado State Forest Service Nursery in Fort Collins. There is no minimum acreage requirement for orders and the plants are available at a nominal cost on a first-come, first-served basis.

According to DCCD’s Program Director Pam Brewster, the seedling shrubs and trees are best used for conservation purposes such as windbreaks, shelter belts, live snow fences, erosion control, wildlife habits, and reforestation.

Seedling shrubs and trees are sold in quantities ranging from four to fifty per lot; prices range from $26 to less than $100 per lot. The actual height of the seedlings is approximately 10” to 30” tall for shrubs, 6” to 12” tall for deciduous and coniferous trees, and a top height of 24” for individual potted evergreen trees. A planting and care guide for the seedlings is included with each order.

The deadline for ordering seedling shrubs and trees is March 28. All orders will be delivered from the Fort Collins nursery and will be available for pick up on April 15 at Kirk Hall, located at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock.

Brewster said everyone who orders the seedlings will receive specific instructions for picking up their orders. To order seedling shrubs and trees online, visit www.dcconservation.com. For further information, contact Pam Brewster at 303-688-3042, extension 100, or e-mail.
