How Much Snowfall Did CPN Recieve Last Year?

Castle Pines North Resident Galen Crowder

by Lane Roberts

Castle Pines North (CPN) resident Galen Crowder monitors rain and snow totals from his home on Huntley Court in HOA1. According to Crowder, from October, 2005, to October, 2006, CPN received 84.9 inches of snowfall.

While almost 85 inches of snow in a year sounds like a lot, how much moisture does it really provide?

According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), the water content of snow is quite variable. In fact, ten inches of snowfall does not equal one inch of water. Ten inches of fresh snow can contain as little as 0.10 inches of water up to 4 inches, depending on crystal structure, wind speed, temperature, and other factors. The NSIDC says the majority of U.S. snows fall with a water-to-snow ratio of between 0.04 and 0.10.
