Breakfast on a school day can often be a rushed affair, but students at Sage Canyon Elementary (SCE) had time to enjoy the moment at a special event last month.  The school’s parent-teacher organization (SCPTO) hosted its annual “Moms & Muffins” event to give students a chance to show off their school and to enjoy a sweet treat before the start of the school day.

“This is one of my favorite events at the school,” said Meghan Ofer, the Assistant Principal at SCE.  “I love to see the kids interact with each other, with their parents, and with their teachers making connections with families.  It’s great to see parents and teachers talking with each other in an informal way.”

Fostering that friendly interaction is the main reason SCPTO sponsors the event every year.  “We love that this is an opportunity for the kids to bring their moms to this place where they spend so much of their time,” said Julie Heath, the SCPTO volunteer who headed up the event.  Heath oversaw the service of hundreds of muffins and other breakfast pastries, along with countless cups of coffee and cocoa.  “We love the way this unites our school community,” she said.

For the kids, a chance for a treat and a special moment with family is really what it’s all about.

“I like spending time and talking,” said third grader Nicholette Figueroa, who came to the event with her mom Tiffany and brother Vincent.  “This chocolate muffin is pretty good, too.”
