RHMS jazz band celebrates in rhythm

Information and photo provided by Amy Shanahan

The Rocky Heights Middle School (RHMS) Jazz Band performed at the 2011 Jazz Celebration at Metro State on April 8. The band performed and received number one overall Superior Ratings from the five judges and clinicians.

The Jazz Celebration at Metro State is in its tenth year and is a wonderful opportunity for high school and middle school Jazz Bands to perform for each other and be judged by professional artists. They also have the opportunity to hear performances by professional artists and to participate in a clinic by the five judges. The purpose of this event is to inspire these young musicians and to help them gain a better understanding of this uniquely American music.

Seventh grader, Ian Kretzman, participated in the clinic and said, “I was very inspired by the Metro State Jazz Band. The piano clinician who came to our session gave me some very good advice, and I can see chords in a whole different way now!”
