Rock Canyon High School football kicks off ‘09

by Scott Lasher

Are you ready for some football? Ready or not, high school football kicked off at Rock Canyon for another season on September 4th against Castleview.

Rock Canyon will be returning several key players, including senior wide receiver Keith Link and senior quarterback Drew Sandlin. Head Coach Tom Lynch however, is reluctant to name any players as “key” in hopes of emphasizing a team first mentality.

“We are really trying to get our kids to buy into the team first concept,” Head Coach Tom Lynch said. “Our receiving corps is back and our entire backfield is back from last season, but really it all starts up front. We have 3 out of 5 starters from last year returning, so we will go as they go.”

After making the playoffs last season as the last team in based on wild card points, Coach Lynch said he and the Jags have learned a few lessons from a season that was marked by the lowlight of losing handily to Wheatridge in the first round of the playoffs.

“We learned we need to take care of our business early so we aren’t waiting until the last night of the season to see if we got in the playoffs,” Lynch said.

RCHS opened their season with two key league games in the first three weeks of the season, both home games against Fountain-Ft. Carson and Pine Creek, two of the top teams in all of Class 4A, let alone the competitive Pikes Peak League.

“Pine Creek is definitely one of the top 2 teams in 4A in my opinion , so we will have a tough road ahead of us,” Lynch said. “We are in one of the toughest 4A leagues in the state, so we can’t sit back on our haunches – we have to execute and work hard every night.”

Provided the Jags can do just that, look for them to be very competitive this season.
