Sheriff’s office rocks
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) School Resource Officers (SROs) not only play a vital role in creating a safe learning environment, they are also approachable mentors who participate in youth activities. DCSO’s rock decorating contest continued the collaboration into summer, inviting first through eighth grade students across Douglas County to submit rocks decorated to celebrate their respective SROs. Colorful and creative entries were submitted from every grade level.
American Academy – Castle Pines sixth grader Avery O’Neil was one of the winning artists. Avery’s rock design was inspired by the children’s graphic novel series Dog Man, about a half-dog, half-man who is also a police officer. Avery’s original idea was to design her rock with a picture of a police dog, but she decided that was a bit too ordinary.
As the prize winner, Avery had the choice to ride in a patrol vehicle on the last day of school or tour DCSO with two friends. Avery chose a ride to school with SRO Deputy Eric Rhymer.
Avery’s rock, along with all winning rock creations, will be showcased throughout the summer at DCSO community events.
