On October 4, the Village Castle Pines Garden Club (Garden Club) held a donation drive for Backpack Society (BS), whose mission is to remove food insecurity from children in school districts in Douglas County, Littleton and Englewood. Led by Garden Club community outreach committee chair Mary Murray, the drive took place at the King Soopers on Promenade Parkway in Castle Rock.
Garden Club volunteers encouraged shoppers to add non-perishable items to their carts, as well as shared information about BS. One generous shopper, who entered the store to pick up just one item for herself, exited with a full cart of food to donate.
More than 1,360 pounds of food was collected, equating to 1,133 meals. Food and cash donations totaling $1,830 were delivered to BS.
“The Garden Club was pleased to make this amazing contribution that will brighten many families’ days,” stated Liane Mair, president of the Garden Club.
Since 1994, the Garden Club has welcomed anyone who wants join; there is no residency requirement. Community outreach is one of the four pillars. The others are friendships, gardening and education.
