Solheim Cup: Once in a lifetime volunteer opportunity for locals

By Lisa Crockett

The Solheim Cup, a bi-annual golf tournament sponsored by the LPGA and the Ladies European Tour, between 12 players from the U.S. and 12 players from Europe, is seeking volunteers to help staff the event. The tournament will be held in August at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker.

“We really rely on our communities for this event, and volunteering at the Solheim Cup is a great way to really be a part of the community. It’s also a wonderful way to get to know other volunteers from around the world,” said Becky Newell, Solheim Cup tournament director. “Our volunteers really ‘bond’ with each other, and by volunteering you may also be making a life-long friend.”

Nearly 1,000 people have signed up to volunteer already, but there is plenty of space available for a variety of assignments. Volunteers do everything from managing golf carts to selling merchandise and are afforded an opportunity to see the tournament in a way that an average spectator cannot.

“This event is only held every four years in the United States, and this is the first time it’s being held west of the Mississippi,” said Lindsay Allen, who is coordinating volunteers for the event for the LPGA. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get an insider’s perspective on the Solheim Cup. It’s really a lot of fun for people who know a lot about the game, and also for people interested in learning.”

Volunteers purchase a $150 “Volunteer Package” which includes a grounds pass for all six days of the tournament to allow them to watch the tournament when they’re not on duty. Volunteers are also offered discounted admission to special events held in connection with the tournament, as well as discounts for friends and family members.

Volunteer assignments are open in a variety of capacities, but volunteers are especially needed to help with admission duties, transportation, and access control. The Marshall’s committee is being staffed by local Colorado golf clubs.

The Solheim Cup will be held August 13 to 18 at the Colorado Golf Club, 8000 Preservation Trail, in Parker.
